Christmas is around the corner! I love all the ornate shop windows, the smell of cinnamon and warm spices and the festive lights! One of the nice things about living in Dublin is that it isn’t too far to another Capital city. Belfast is about 2 hours by car and I had read about their Christmas Market at City Hall. This past weekend my family took a quick day trip to see it!
I was a little worried about going in November. This was my first experience going to a Christmas Market. I was afraid it might be a bit early in the season but as it turns out there was no need for concern. The market did not disappoint! There are over 90 stalls and City Hall is decorated beautifully as the backdrop. It was quite a crowd when we went but I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the unique handmade ornaments, woodwork and artistry on display. There were children and adults all around enjoying the lights and ambiance of Christmas.
In addition to the festive lights you’ll immediately start taking in the aromas from foods found around the globe. You’ll want to try some Mulled Wine or Irish Coffee or maybe some Hot Chocolate as you make your way around the market. My family feasted on brownies, Dutch pancakes and German sausage. There are so many delicious options that it can be a tough decision choosing what you’ll want. We decided when we arrived to walk around once just to take everything in. My kids contemplated all the sweets as we strolled past, trying to decide what they would try on our second time through the stalls.
Another stunning thing to see is just inside City Hall. While the outside is lovely, the inside of City Hall is decorated equally delightfully and elegant with a dazzling tree as the centerpiece and garland and lights around the room. It is a great place to take a quick family picture or selfie.
If you are ever in Belfast around the Christmas season, be sure to go to City Hall and enjoy the fun!
