Everyone associates Ireland with St. Patrick. Not everyone knows that there is another Saint that has a connection with Dublin. Last week, with Valentine’s Day coming up, I decided it was the perfect time to go see Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin. Why? I had read that St. Valentine’s remains are at the Church. They were brought there in 1836. You can read more about why and the history here. Today, people come and visit the shrine and pray for love or blessings on their marriage or relationship. There are special mass services around Valentine’s Day as well. February is a busy time for this Church I am sure.
Whitefriar Street Church is a short walk away from St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The Church itself is lovely. It is worth the visit if you find yourself in the area. As you enter the doors to the main Church sanctuary, there are beautiful stained glass windows that line the left side of the Church. The Shrine to St. Valentine is up a little way along the right side of the Church.
There is a sculpture of St. Valentine above a glass cabinet. The remains of St. Valentine are in a reliquary below within the glass cabinet. There is also a small notebook where people can come and write their prayers to St. Valentine.
This Church is smaller than St. Patrick’s or Christ Church Cathedral and won’t take as much time to see. However, it is filled with beautiful sculptures, tile work and stained glass. It is a lovely Church that is worth the time to go visit.
